NCEMA Fall 2024 Conference - CANCELLED
Dear Colleagues, Partners, and Stakeholders
It is with a heavy heart that I announce the cancellation of the North Carolina Emergency Management Association’s 2024 Fall Emergency Management Conference, originally scheduled for December 1-4 in Atlantic Beach, NC.
As you are all aware, our state has been deeply impacted by the unprecedented and catastrophic floods resulting from Hurricane Helene. Many of our friends, co-workers, and members have suffered devastating losses. Homes, families, and offices across western North Carolina, are grappling with the aftermath—an aftermath that will take months, and in many cases, years, to fully recover from.
In the wake of this tragedy, I have been humbled and inspired by the incredible response from our emergency management community. From local emergency management teams to the westward mobilization of resources and personnel across central and eastern North Carolina, I am reminded of what truly makes our North Carolina emergency management community one of the best in the nation: our people.
You—our members, partners, and colleagues in emergency services—continue to answer the call, no matter the challenges. We have witnessed an extraordinary migration of emergency managers, fire departments, EMS, law enforcement, and the National Guard from every corner of our state. Hundreds of pieces of equipment have been mobilized to support unmet needs in communities that have suffered unimaginable damages.
While we may not have the opportunity to gather for our conference this fall, we have come together as a state and as a profession in ways that matter most. The strength and resilience of our emergency management family is on full display, and I am deeply honored to work alongside each of you during this difficult time.
To our colleagues in the affected counties, please stay safe. When you find a moment, take time to catch your breath and know that we stand with you. For those not directly involved in the response, I ask that you continue to keep the western branch and all impacted residents in your thoughts and prayers.
We look forward to a future where we can reunite in person to reflect on and celebrate the work that defines our North Carolina emergency management community. Until then, stay strong, stay safe, and thank you for your unwavering commitment to our state and its people.
Sincerely,
Stacie Miles, MPA, CEM
President
